Homeowner's Insurance
When a covered loss occurs, a homeowner’s policy will pay to repair or rebuild your home. In choosing an amount to insure for, the amount should be for the 100% replacement value. The cost of current construction materials and labor needs to be determined so that enough funds are available to duplicate the current home as it was before the loss.
When insuring your personal belongings, most policies automatically provide coverage based on 50% to 70% of the insured structure value. To determine if you have enough coverage you should conduct a home inventory audit. To accomplish this, spend time in each room cataloging all the items you have. Try and estimate the cost to replace those items in today’s dollars. A replacement-cost policy provides coverage based on new for old. Pay special attention to antiques, high-value artwork, jewelry, electronics, and camera equipment. If necessary, a separate endorsement may need to be added to give you the protection you seek.
If a covered loss occurs, a homeowner’s policy will usually pay up to 20% of the structure value for you to live elsewhere while your home is repaired or rebuilt. The policy pays for the additional expenses that are incurred such as hotel and other bills that you were unaccustomed to paying while this occurs.
Liability coverage protects you and your family against claims for bodily injury or property damage that you or family members cause to other people and are found or deemed to be negligent. Household members can include any family members that reside in your house, as well as your pets. Medical coverage is also part of the policy. If there is an injury at your home, you can have that insured person submit the medical bills without a lawsuit being filed against you.
Automobile Insurance
When a covered loss occurs, an auto policy is designed to pay the cost of repairs to your vehicle in case of an accident, protect you from lawsuits, and provide coverage for injuries that may be sustained from an accident.
Comprehensive - Covers your automobile for damage not caused by collision, or upset. For example: Fire, theft, vandalism, hail, wind, glass, hitting an animal, and much more. This is optional coverage, but if you are financing your car, the bank or lease company will require you to carry this coverage.
Collision – Pays for damage to your automobile caused by a collision, or upset. This is optional coverage, but if you are financing your car, the bank or lease company will require you to carry this coverage.
Bodily Injury Liability – Covers your legal liability for bodily injury claims brought against you. Lawsuits can be for any amount regardless of your income and financial worth. The courts are more willing to garnish wages and seek restitution to satisfy judgments if you are found legally liable. Therefore you need to choose liability limits that are high enough to cover possible claims.
Property Damage Liability - Covers your legal liability for property damage. This coverage protects you for damage you do to another’s property. Coverage limits should take into account the amount of maximum damage that you feel you could be responsible for. Think about what happens if you damage a valuable piece of real estate, or if you cause a multiple car accident involving expensive damages to vehicles.
Personal Injury Protection/Medical Payments – This covers you for the medical expenses that you sustain as a result of an accident. In New York State, the minimum limit is $50,000 per person, which is available for each injured person in the vehicle.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist - This provides coverage to you when you are injured by another person who has no insurance, or has limits that do not cover your damages. To be able to collect this coverage, you must also have bodily injury limits that are greater than the responsible party's limits. This coverage will only be available upon a court-awarded settlement or judgment.
Many policies also offer the following additional optional coverages as long as you also carry physical damage coverage:
Transportation Expenses – Also known as rental reimbursement, you can pick a daily limit that you can use if your car is involved with a covered loss, and you are in need of a rental vehicle while it is being repaired or is not drivable.
Road Service – Also known as towing, you can be reimbursed for your expenses up to the limit you choose for towing or any other roadside assistance need.
Life Insurance
You can purchase a life insurance policy with the goal of replacing income that would have been earned throughout an individual’s life. Depending on your goals for your family and children, you may purchase a policy that provides funds for a college education. Life insurance will also be an important estate-planning tool if the estate taxation rates and limits are changed in the future. Business applications also apply in the event that there may be a need for transferring the ownership of a business.
There are many different types of life insurance. Term, Whole Life, and Universal Life policies are the most common. Each is very different, but they all provide funds at the time of need. When looking for a policy, it is best to consult with someone that can help you determine your long- and short-term goals. Matching you to a policy that fits your exact needs is very important.
Your current health status and long-term goals are very unique to you, and as an independent agent, we have access to many companies that assist us in tailoring a policy that is just right for you.

Umbrella/Excess Liability Insurance
Everyone should consider purchasing an umbrella excess-liability policy. In the past only people with wealth were considered to have the need for this policy, but as lawsuit amounts have risen, there’s risk involved for just about everyone. Your auto, home, boat, and renter’s policy may not provide enough coverage to fully protect you in case of a serious accident. And this type of policy provides an additional layer of liability coverage above your existing policies. As part of the underlying umbrella/excess-liability policies, the insurance company will pay your defense costs if your lawsuit is for a covered loss. The cost to you, therefore, is relatively inexpensive compared to the amount that you could spend for your own legal defense.
